Oil Pulling 101: An Ancient Ritual for a Fresh Start to Your Day

Some of the simplest rituals are also the oldest. Oil pulling, the practice of swishing a spoonful of oil around the mouth, has roots in traditional Ayurvedic self-care going back thousands of years. Today it has found its way into many modern morning routines, and it is one of our favorite slow, grounding ways to start the day.

What Is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is exactly what it sounds like. You take a spoonful of oil, usually coconut oil, and gently swish and "pull" it between your teeth for several minutes before spitting it out. Many people love how fresh and clean their mouth feels afterward, and it makes a peaceful few minutes of quiet before the day gets busy.

Our Oil Pull Blends

We start every Oil Pull Blend with high quality coconut oil and add essential oils for flavor and freshness.

How to Oil Pull

  1. Start first thing. Most people oil pull in the morning, before eating or drinking.

  2. Scoop a teaspoon. If your blend is solid, let it melt in your mouth for a moment.

  3. Swish gently. Move the oil slowly around your mouth and between your teeth. Start with 5 minutes and work up to 15 to 20 as it feels comfortable.

  4. Spit it into the trash. Never in the sink or toilet, since coconut oil can harden and clog pipes.

  5. Rinse and brush. Rinse with warm water, then brush and floss as usual.

Tips for Making It a Habit

  • Oil pull while you shower, make the bed or get the coffee going.

  • Keep your jar next to your toothbrush so you see it every morning.

  • Do not swallow the oil.

  • If your jaw gets tired, start with shorter sessions and build up slowly.

A Gentle Reminder

Oil pulling is a self-care ritual, not a replacement for brushing, flossing or regular visits to your dentist. Our blends contain essential oils, so they are for adults only. If you are pregnant, nursing or managing a health condition, check with your healthcare provider before starting.
