Inspired by a US Patent Application Publication - a natural alternative to minoxidil.
First of all, I want to disclose that the following formula is my version of the Human Hair Root Stimulator using Emu Oil to Deliver Specific Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils to the Hair Follicles: Pub. No.: US 2009/0186095 A1. "Organic Root Stimulating Serum" is my own formula but contains the essential oils and emu oil as directed in the study. No ratios were published, the ratios used are my own.
Please refer to the link above to read the application in it's entirety, you'll learn why Emu Oil is the preferred carrier as well as why Rosemary, Lavender, Cedarwood and Thyme were the chosen therapeutic grade essential oils. Fascinating stuff!!
Serum Formula - CW Version

Thanks Rebecca. I missed that there was more to read than in the picture, I thought you were just stating a source. :)
Thanks so much for sharing this, only last night I ordered what I needed to make up your Thicker hair blend and the Rosemary and Lavender final rinse, this will e an added bonus!
Rachel, read the study, it states why these particular EOs were chosen.
I don’t think pure Frankincense could hurt anything but, I’ve never used it in this particular blend so I can’t give you a definite answer on this one.
I thought I had read on Camp Wanderer at some point that Frankincense was good for hair growth as well. Do I have that wrong? If it is do you think it would hurt the mix synergistically?
Is there a particular reason that you mix the emu oil with these specific other oils? I have some of them, so I wonder if it would matter if I don’t put the cedarwood and thyme one in them mixuture?
Sure will! What email address should I send it to? Thanks!
It’s a possibility Michele…will you send me an email? I’ll respond when I make a decision, thanks!
Do you think there is any chance of you making up this blend & selling it? I am new to EO’s & purchased Jeddy’s blend
I would think so, read the entire study to make your decision :)
I have very curly and VERY VERY dry hair. Would this work for that as well?
Here you go! firstname.lastname@example.org
Oops! Sorry Michele, here’s the email: email@example.com
Count me in as being interested in buying the hair serum already blended from you! Let us know an email …
Thanks for asking Renee, I haven’t moved forward with this as of yet. If I do, I’ll add it to the CW Store when it’s up and running :)
I’m interested in your hair serum, are you selling it yet?
Could I use coconut for now? Don’t have any emu bit have everything else!
Add the EOs then top the bottle off with Emu oil :)
How much emu oil do I add?
Once a day if possible but it is greasy, you would need to wash your hair everyday. I apply 2 to 3x a week and it took two months to see a litte new growth.
How often do you apply?
It took 2 months for me to see results, everyone will respond differently however :)
Hello. Thanks for the recipe! How long would you say it would take before seeing results?
Hello. Thanks for the recipe! How long would you saw it would take before seeing results?
can i use any other oil…i am vegan
I have psoriasis on my head. Would this solution be okay for me?
Hi Jenn! You can probably substitute fractionated coconut oil but I can’t guarantee the same results as you would get with the Emu Oil.
Hi Amy Leigh! You can find Emu Oil on amazon. Just click here. And click here for Cedarwood.
Where would you suggest I purchase Emu Oil and Cedarwood essential oil? It was not available in the web-store I found, and I don’t know of any neighborhood stores- in this neck of the woods- I am now living on the Connecticut & Massachusetts border, and I do not travel well, or far anymore … I appreciate your time,
My husband and I used to raise emus. The oil is simply AMAZING. It stands on its own for some things. My daughter used it during her first pregnancy and she didn’t have any stretch marks at all.
Karen that’s a great question! I don’t see why not, I think I’ll take that experiment on…my thinning brows could use a little help.
It hasn’t been a problem for me at all!
How does this affect color treated hair?
Wondering if this would work for eyebrows? Any thoughts? Thank you, I Love Your Site!
I say yes! The Emu oil is very emollient.
Rebecca, I did try this on my eyebrows (which are non-existent). It has been about three weeks now. I saw results after two weeks. Very fast for hair growth. It’s nice to have some mention of eyebrows now. Can’t wait to see how they look after two months. I will keep you updated. Thank you for your awesome site!
Miranda, all the links are in the post :)
Hi, was wondering if you can post links to all ingredients needed plus a.recommended container to buy? I was also using minoxidil but it makes lmy scalp terribly itchy and rritated, plus no regrowth. Thank you.
I have been using Rogain for 6 months now with little improvements :(. Do you think this would work well in conjunction to Rogain? I would like to ween off of it and just do essential oils- I’m just afraid that I will have too much shedding.
Thank you in advance.
I tried to post a little earlier but not sure I did it right. I mixed up a batch of serum tonight and applied some to my thin spot. Will let you know how it goes.
All I can say is, try it! I’ve never switched up the oils so I don’t know if the effectiveness would change or not.
Do you think adding something like juniper berry or ylang ylang to help the scent would diminish the effectiveness of this blend? I have mixed it and I am currently trying to use it but the scent is not pleasant to me.
To be honest, I’m not sure but I’ve added it to my routine because it’s helping :)
I think this is definitely worth trying! I tried to copy/paste the article in my browser to read the study but nothing came up (actually, just this blog since it referenced the study). My question is this: does the blend require lifetime use to continuously experience results (like Rogaine)? Or, once desired results are achieved, can the usage be stopped completely without the risk of losing the regrowth of hair?
That is great news Karen! I never even considered that it would be a good protocol for thinning eyebrows, thank you for your comment :)
Just enough to massage into scalp, I use a drop at a time. Less is more :)
I was wondering how much do you actually put on the scalp? Is it the whole dropper or just a couple drops and massage it in? I read through the comments but didn’t see that particular question. I apologize if I missed it. :)
Great find. I had never heard of emu oil or its uses. Anyone ever combine it with peppermint oil? I would think that might have stimulating effects on follicles.
Made some of this for my mother in law who underwent chemo. The bottle of emu oil in the link is the one I ordered; however it’s a small bottle and doesn’t fill the 2 oz bottle dropper. It’s about half way.
If you sell this, I am in.
not easy pouring it in to dropper bottle. When I used it I poured emu oil onto a bowl then already mixed essential oils to it with dropper. I’m seeing if this method is as good.
Emu oil is thick but I’ve always been able to pour or squeeze it into another container. If you took the lid off the your bottle of emu oil is it too thick to pour, even slowly?
Just got a bottle of emu oil at Vitacost to try making this serum. It is not a liquid I can pore, so I wondered if anyone could give me any assistance. How do I pore it into dropper bottle with essential oils?
Evelyn, you could try Birch…it’s a hair growth stimulant as well. FYI – if you’re on blood thinners or allergic to aspirin you should avoid Birch.
Hi Rebecca I have high blood pressure. Is there anything else I could use in place of the rosemary and thyme? I really need something for my thinning hairl
Jennifer, how long have you been using this supplement for?
My hair is growing! OHEMGEE!
Hi there, I am considering trying this out. I am just waiting for the Emu oil to come in from Amazon. Has anyone else had any luck with hair-growth?
Add your essential oils to the bottle first, then top off the bottle with Emu oil. I’ve used at least 3 different brands of organic emu oil and have always been able to pour it. You may have to take the top off to make it easier to pour. Once you fill your bottle, seal the top with your finger tip and tip the bottle back and forth to blend. Put a lid or a dropper on and you’re good to go.
hi, im still confused. i want to know, i have to mix the EO first and put the whole bottle of the EMU oil?
Thank you so much Rebecca. I am having results with this. I didn’t take pictures because I only have about a half an inch of hair growth due to shaving my head 2 months ago. It’s one thing to be bald it’s another to advertise it.
My sparse spots have 1/8" or maybe a little shorter coming in. Not all of the sparse spots but enough to be encouraged because it’s one of the ones in the front. That’s after almost 3 weeks. I am now trying it on my eyebrows too. I have my husband check my head everyday because I’m afraid of the psoriasis coming back. I use Bragg’s ACV everday but I’m still paranoid about it.
I can’t tell you how grateful I am to have found yours and Jillee’s blogs. I got Hashimoto’s after my second child and was told many women who have late in life pregnancies get thyroid problems. I had my children in my 40’s. I started losing my hair like crazy ever since to a point that I hated showering for the amount of hair I would find in the drain.
Thankfully, I never had complete bald spots just sparse spots and I guess that’s why this is working for me. I was told by my endocrinologist that my hair might never come back even if we do manage to get my thyroid regulated.
Thank you for doing what you do, I’m sure you’ve helped a lot of people. God Bless.
I started in mid summer. I’m not really sure of the month. I now have about 3/4 of an inch of hair along my hairline, where it fell out after my son was born…17 years ago! I’m so happy.
Thank you so much for this post. I suffered with scalp psoriasis for years and recently went through a very stressful time so my occasional patches morphed into it covering most of my head. I hated to use all of the tar smelling shampoos and started looking into natural remedies. I shaved my head and I alternated using apple cider vinegar, extra virgin coconut oil and tea tree oil a few times a day and within 3 days the scaley build up was gone.
That was a month ago. I thankfully don’t have any completely bald spots but I do have quite a few spots that look lighter than the rest and was very concerned about it until I saw your post. I’m going to give it a try. I recently started using EO’s to treat my Hashimoto’s and my husband’s high blood pressure so I have the oils needed to make this remedy.
Thanks so much to you and your sister, I’m a fan of both of your blogs. You put some much needed information out there. I tried getting information on some other blogs about helping my husband’s HBP and most of those blogs will only give you information if you agree to become a member and buy those really expensive oils, which I cannot afford. I’m going to whip up a batch tonight.
Ryan, yes…it took a several months for me to see a difference too!
Hi Rebecca, I am in my late 20’s and I noticed in September the back-top of my head has begun thinning. I came across your formula and have started using in October and proceeded to apply it about 5 times a week during the evenings before bed. I was curious if you knew roughly how long it would take before I start noticing positive results? It’s hard for me to tell right now but from what I have been reading from the other comments people were receiving results after a few months.
Not in my opinion but you can reduce the recipe if needed.
thanks for sharing
i have a question, you put 72 drops of EOS in 15ml carrier oil? isnt it too much?
Hi Rebecca, I can hardly wait to make this serum. I’ve tried lots of other remedies you have with great success. The serum asks for cedarwood the one I have on hand is called Texas cedarwood. Do you think this one will work? Hope to hear from you soon.
I can’t speak to the EOs you’re using but I would think they would be fine. If you’re experiencing an unfavorable reaction, I would discontinue use and let the irritation clear up. Are you using a high quality, organic emu oil?
I made this mixture, with Young Living oils, and am using the emu oil you suggest… Ive pit it on for three nights now and today red sore bumps have appeared on my scalp where ive been putting it! I googled to see if i could see anyone else say how they are allergic to emu oil, but couldnt find anything. Have you heard of anyone else having this problem??
I hope i can figure out whats bothering me, i really want to see if this works for my hair loss around my hairline. Also, i used Cederwood instead of Thyme because I didnt have it on hand and saw on other recipes they use that
I’ve used both Sheila, with good results :)
Hi. I have the wrong cedar wood (juniperus Virginia). I am going to order the correct one when I do my next sparks order, but do u think it will work? AND did the study list a specific cedar wood? (Yours or mine?) Im just curious cos my husband has been using… Thanks
Rebecca, thank you for sharing so much truly incredible information.
I have alopecia
Woundering if anyone has had positive results with it yet? Tired and have tried just about everything over the past 16+years
Not yet, but don’t give up hope! 2015 will be a great year for new additions to the CW Shop! www.campwander.com/shop/
Any updates on you selling this?
Hi Angelica, I really can’t say…I’ve never used Texas Cedarwood!
Thanks so much for this. I have been looking to stop using Rogain for a while as its not natural and irritates my scalp. I have also seen on the web people using Jojoba and Grapeseed oil as a base. What do you think of those oils, are they also as effective as Emu oil?
My hairline is so full now, I just can’t believe it! It’s like a miracle. I am so pleased that I cannot stop evangelizing about it!
I just saw a post on this and am interested in trying since after chemo I have been left with very little hair. Don’t know if I have all the oils at this point. I noticed someone asked about the YL oils because she was having problems with red patches after using. I would suggest using more carrier oil or less EOs. It is usually recommended to dilute EOs if they irritate you.
Jacqueline, first and foremost I would try a natural alternative that might calm compulsions like twirling hair for lasting results and change. My suggestion would be Jeddy’s Blend, a great blend of pure essential oils for focus, calm and grounding. You can read many testimonials at www.jeddysblend.com! All my best to you and your son!
Hi. I was hoping if you could tell me if this would work for my 7 year old son. He has ADD and one of his medicines gave him a nervous tick where he would twirl the hair on the top of his head and now he has a bald spot. If this doesn’t work, can you give me any information on what could help with the hair and the nervous tick?
Do you sell the hair regrowth
serum at your store? I didn’t see it….My mothers interested in getting it.
Another EO fallower of yours. Xo
My oils are coming in today! SO excited to mix this up and see what happens. I am on an IV infusion to treat Takayasus Arteritis, an extremely rare disease, and for two years now, my hair has thinned and my scalp has had horrible, painful breakouts, almost like sores. It would be nice if my hair can thicken up again and I can sleep comfortably on my pillow. Praying for the best!
I use this serum for my poor thin eyebrows, you might try it for your poor beard :)
Hi, thank you for posting this.
My cuestión is, can i use it to grow my facial hair, i mean my poor beard?
All I can tell you is, Emu oil was selected specially because of its deep penetration properties and ability to thicken skin so to speak, which is a wonderful benefit for tight scalps and waning circulation!
Hi Pat -
Perfect timing – we are launching today!
Will you be selling this Serum on your CW Shop soon??
I would love to purchase ready made before I invest in these oils.
I have tried Rosemary at night and the Lavender Rosemary Final Rinse to no avail.
With appreciation…..and you have a Great Blog!!!
Although a great question, I don’t have an answer as I have not used Minoxidill. My positive experience has been with simply applying the serum.
Could you use this mix in conjunction with minoxidil? If so would you use it before or after?
Sheryl, I’m happy to tell you that you can now order the hair serum here: https://campwander.com/product-category/serums-balms-healing-sticks/
I would be interested in buying this already made up if you decide to.
Thank you for asking ~ we just recently added it to our CW Shop! https://campwander.com/product/cw-organic-root-stimulating-serum/
Are you selling the root stimulating hair regrowth serum ? …Didnt see it on the site ?
Thank you so much, Rebecca!!
I am a male and my hair is shedding in the crown and front area. I don’t want to start Minoxidil treatment as I prefer natural remedies. Will this work to stop hair loss and also re-growth of hair where there is shedding?
Can I also add pumpkin seed oil to this mixture?
I have been using the https://campwander.com/product/cw-organic-root-stimulating-serum/, Works wonders on my dry hair. My beautician replied that I do not need any over the counter conditioners, that my hair is no linger dry and brittle. Thanks!
Thank you, this really helps a lot.
Comments will be approved before showing up.
