Every so often I come across the best kind of compliment for essential oil use and I knew I was in the presence of greatness when I read about the omega 3 rich fatty acids found in hemp seed oil. The combination of pure essential oils and organic hemp seed oil has it all, beauty and brains! Meaning nourished skin, reduced inflammation, antioxidants to guard against skin damage, moisture retention and relief of dry, itchy, irritated skin related to eczema. Hemp seed oil is a great source of high-quality nutrients and has a long history as an all-purpose natural remedy. This is important, it contains virtually no THC, the element in cannabis. Essential oil users use carrier oils often for dilution and coverage, I like to use nutrient packed carrier oils.  Solid, organic coconut oil is one of my faves because it adds value to essential oil use with unique properties like lauric acid. The body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, which has antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-protozoa properties.  But solid coconut oil is well....solid and fractionated coconut oil (liquid state) has lost some of solid coconut oil's most prized benefits in the manufacturing process. Hemp Seed Oil is an amazing alternative, packed with nutrition to enhance any roller bottle protocol.

BEAUTY!

  1.  Hemp seed oil supports healthy hair, skin and nails. 2.  Often used as a moisturizer. 3.  Known to reduce dryness and relieve itching and skin irritations from eczema. 4.  Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, may protect against the aging process, works to keep skin calm.

BRAINS!

  1.  This is awesome!  3:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids, a balance shown to support heart health and protect against stroke (find proper daily requirements). 2.  Hemp seed oil is a mercury free choice!  Fish has been our go to source for Omega 3s but now there's a concern for the mercury content found in cold water fish especially for pregnant women. "Results from the present study among a U.S. cohort with moderate fish intake suggest that maternal fish consumption during pregnancy may benefit offspring cognition in infancy but that exposure to higher levels of mercury has adverse effects on child cognition. These findings, based on a relatively small group of women, merit further investigation and verification in other populations consuming moderate amounts of seafood. Meanwhile, we recommend that women continue to consume fish during pregnancy but seek out varieties with lower levels of mercury."  {source} 3.  Moreover, dietary omega-3 fatty acids are certainly involved in the prevention of some aspects of cardiovascular disease (including at the level of cerebral vascularization), and in some neuropsychiatric disorders, particularly depression, as well as in dementia, notably Alzheimer's disease. {source} 4.  Hemp seed also has high levels of vitamins A, C and E and β-carotene, and it is rich in minerals like phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sulfur and calcium. {source}

Skin-Serum

All those amazing properties in a carrier oil called Hemp Seed Oil and we haven't added any essential oils yet.  This is my idea of a super sophisticated, super simple, super affordable skin serum! Things get easy from here on out because YOU get to add your favorite essential oils, any single, any blend.  I have a favorite however, everyone loves it and knows how to use it - just Lavender. Lavender is a universally loved essential oil with sophisticated antimicrobial properties.  You can't go wrong with this in your purse, on your desk and in your makeup bag.  Outside of CW Salves, simple serums are so much fun for me to give to friends and family, even strangers.  It's the perfect introduction to the EO Life!

Can this be used as a face moisturizer, or is it too oily?

I ordered hemp oil from Sparks when it was on sale and I absolutely LOVE it. Just one drop to the tops of my hands and then massaged in is so soothing and I can tell the difference in my skin. Definitely ordering more and adding this to my skin care regime.

Do you happen to know how stable the omega3 in the hemp oil is? One of the disadvantages of fish oil, ground flax seed oil and shelled walnuts in the baking aisle is their omega 3 goes rancid quickly. Ground flax seed should be ground just prior to use, walnuts should be bought in the grocery aisle and stored in the fridge or freezer and I’ve read a study (don’t remover where) that many fish oil capsules are actually rancid before we even swallow them and the best flax seed oil is always found refrigerated. I’m anxious to try hemp seed oil – it looks to have many benefits I’m just wondering how to avoid the rancidity issue.

Curious about this too. Would heating it change or be bad for it?

Can this replace the olive oil in your all purpose salve?

Yes, Lavender can be used in all those ways with hemp seed oil added. Solid coconut is always a better choice over FCO as the good medium chain fats are still in tact. For a liquified carrier, hemp seed oil has more benefits than FCO in my opinion. Our body and brain need those fats!

Hi Rebecca,
Thanks for another wonderful post!! Is the list you gave (after talking about Lavender) specific to Lavender or how to use it once its added to the hemp seed oil? Also, what are the differing benefits from solid coconut oil to fractionated coconut oil? (I understand their differing state (solid/non-solidifying) but does one possess more benefits?

Pam, I agree. I have purchased it from a few different health food stores, as well as an online merchant who delivered it in a refrigerated case. Due to rancidity, my vote is if you make this, keep your roller ball/container in the fridge. I use the oil to clean my face using the oil cleaning method and absolutely love it!

I love the Hemp Seed Oil and am so grateful for the information you provide. I put it in my facial moisturizer and my skin feels and looks so great. Coconut oil is great, but it does clog pores, especially people that are prone to acne. Hemp Seed Oil has a rating of 0, meaning it does not clog pores. (coconut oil is 3-4, depending on the chart you look at!) I also purchased Birch and I am so pleased that I did. I know that people say you can substitute Wintergreen for Birch, but I have found that Birch works so much better for me. Looking forward to making the warming pain blend as soon as I order Emu Oil. Thank you for your research and the time it must take you to put together all of the wonderful recipes and articles that you post. I use many of your recipes and love them.

I was concerned about the refrigeration of the hemp oil. I’m so excited to start using it but once it’s mixed with EO’s will it still need to be refrigerated? That will be terribly inconvenient. Thoughts???

Do you know when Camp Wander will have hemp seed oil available again? I hesitate to order it from anywhere else.

Gywn, I just learned something new about Hemp Seed Oil…thought you would be interested in this too! From www.mountainroseherbs.com
Exceptionally rich oil high in essential omega fatty acids and proteins. This oil has a pleasant nutty smell, deep green color, and absorbs well into the skin. This organic hemp seed oil has a dark green color and rich flavor. A sensitive oil that will degrade under excessive light exposure and any fluctuation in temperature. Refrigeration is recommended. The oil does not contain detectable Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The green color in hemp seed oil is a result of the high level of chlorophyll which is naturally present in the seeds.

Hemp seed oil is considered to be the most nutritional oils available. It has a plethora of medicinal, nutritional, and cosmetic uses, making it a wonderful multipurpose ingredient. Hemp seed oil provides the body with complete protein, nutrition, and with all the essential amino acids necessary for health and wellness. The pleasantly nutty taste of hemp seed oil makes it easy to incorporate into your culinary recipes.

Hemp seed oil is easily digestible in its raw state. It contains less than 10% saturated fats, and 70-80% polyunsaturated fatty acids. This is an unusually high level of the good oils, making this oil beneficial for culinary use. Hemp oil should not be fried, and should preferably be used cold. It may easily be added to salad dressings, pasta, vegetables, smoothies, soups, sauces, hummus, guacamole, pesto, or other foods after the heating/baking has been completed. Hemp seed oil may be added to any body care or cosmetic product, including creams, lotions, facial or body oils, massage oils, shampoo, conditioner, shaving products, lip balm, soap, and any other product. In hair care products, hemp seed oil increases elasticity, manageability, and shine.

I have only begun to use this hemp seed oil with lavender. I used it on a really bad pinch on my inner arm. It took the pain away almost immediately, and the next day the bruise was almost gone! I love this mixture! Thank you so much for this recipe!
