16 Ways to Use Frankincense!

The Roman Empire coveted the Frankincense trade, Augustus Caesar ordered 10,000 Roman troops to invade the region in order to control Frankincense production, but the troops never made it through the desert and had to turn back. Frankincense is still a precious commodity as clinical documentation piles up proving it to be effective for cancer, aging, memory and core health.

1. Anti-Inflammatory: Studies show Frankincense has anti-inflammatory properties, much like NSAIDS/Advil.

  • Combine Frankincense with Marjoram to reduce muscle, joint and bone pain. Massage 2 drops of each with fractionated coconut oil into large joints like knee and shoulder. Half dose for smaller joints. Reapply as needed.
  • Relieve inflammation in the respiratory system by diffusing Frankincense or inhaling vapors from a bowl of hot water.
  • Place 2 to 3 drops of Frankincense under the tongue 1 to 2x daily to reduce inflammation, nerve issues, and depression.
  • Reduce gum disease, slow recession of gums by Oil Pulling with Frankincense. Add 1 drop each Frankincense, Lavender Thieves Immunity Blend and Melaleuca to 1 tablespoon of fractionated coconut oil. Swish for 20 minutes and spit into the garbage and brush your teeth! Great practice and worth reading about {HERE}.
  • Get rid of stubborn headaches by placing 1 drop of Frankincense on pad of thumb, pressing the essential oil on the roof of mouth and holding for several seconds.
  • For Restless Leg Syndrome relief, apply 2 drops Frankincense with carrier oil to the bottom of each foot and massage each night.

2. Anti-aging: Frankincense is beneficial for various skin conditions including the lessening of wrinkles and reduction of age spots. Many have found a bonus side effect of applying Frankincense on the face, improved vision!

  • To reduce fine lines around eyes, blend equal parts Frankincense, Cypress, Lavender and fractionated coconut oil in a glass roller bottle. Dab on facial bones surrounding eyes morning and night after washing face, careful not to get too close to the eyes! Dilute with carrier oil if you so.
  • Apply Frankincense neat, (undiluted) to uneven skin tone.
  • Add a drop of Frankincense to your moisturizer with every use!
  • Apply undiluted to acne or occasional breakouts.
  • Apply with a little fractionated coconut oil to wounds to reduce scarring. Great for stretch marks.

3. Immunity Enhancer: Whether it be from bacteria, virus or external toxins that we come in contact with on a daily basis, we all need the immunity enhancing quality of Frankincense.

  • Frankincense supports the production of white blood cells. Take 2 to 3 drops under the tongue twice daily, for depleted white blood count, drip and massage 2 drops of Frankincense with carrier oil along the spine and back of neck daily.
  • Apply to temples for management of stress.
  • Apply to the base of brain stem 2x daily to help with depression.
  • Add Frankincense to Airway Respiratory Blend (ravintsara, spearmint, ravansara, himalayan wintergreen, lime, helichrysum and peppermint), massage on chest and throat for a persistent cough.
  • Layer Frankincense over any essential oil to enhance that oils properties and drive the oils deeper. Think of Frankincense as a "kickin it up a notch" essential oil because it is and it DOES!

While this is a very short list of all the benefits of Frankincense, it's a good representation of just how broad and deep it's properties go. If I had one essential oil to depend on, Frankincense would be the one!

Hi for gums did you mean swish for 20 seconds? You wrote 20 minutes. I don’t think I could do that. Thanks for the great information.

Try starting just before getting in the shower and then swishing while getting in and showering. I find the time passes quickly this way and if I need to spit some out (sometimes mouth gets full as saliva accumulates) its easy too. Don’t worry if it takes a few days to build to the 20min either. It’s ok to start with 10 then 15 and so on if that’s the way it works for you. 20min is ideal but less time is also a benefit.

It’s 20 minutes – seems like a long time but, you get used to it and the benefits are so worth it :)

I read on your sister, Dori’s blog, that you told her to use 3 drops of this under her husband’s tongue 2 x’s a day for depression and it was helpful. I have been suffering with constant 24 hours a day head and face pain for 2 and 1/2 years which has destroyed my life. I am only 40, 3 children, a teacher…it has destroyed me. Nothing has helped the pain and the pain has gotten much worse. The constant pain has led to very bad depression and anxiety. I would like to try this if it would help as I have tried quite a few prescription medications and they don’t do anything because I still have the head pain so my mood is not lifted. Thank you. I hope you get this. I just subscribed to your blog and am new to the oils. Have never used them.

Ashlee, if you’re using a pure Frankincense I believe it is but you of course should consult with your physician or midwife :)

My daughter and I just love Frankincense. All her life she’s struggled with severe acne; taking antibiotics then using a popular commercial product. A few months ago I sent her a bottle of Frankincense. She started using it ‘neat’ on her face and within the first 3 days she noticed her acne was clearing up, even the welts. She’s thrilled. I use it for my now-fading facial sun spots and a whole host of other uses.
Thanks for a great post!

Has anyone had a problem with an eczema-type rash after ingesting Frankincense daily? I’m hoping it’s not from using it because it helps in so many ways. I’m trying to determine why this rash appeared on my wrist a couple of months ago. It showed up as a few small itchy spots that I scratched, and it turned into an open wound that hasn’t healed. I take 2 drops of Frankincense under my tongue every night before bed.

Natalie, not all essential oils and brands have a dietary standard. Always follow the labels directions :)

On the bottle it says not for internal use, and to consult a physician. is the roof of your mouth okay or is that considered internal use? I’m new at this.

Hello Rebecca,
Thank-you so much for all of your wonderful work and sharing. Blessings to you.
I do have a question. A number of years ago I had gone to a dermatologist and
he diagnosed my skin condition – sebaceous hyperplasia. (They are plugged pores
that have enlarged with nothing to expel.) It is a very common skin problem
as we age. The medical field can do nothing and I am getting more of them.
I really would appreciate suggestions as I really want to get rid of them.
I do wonder if Frankincense might be helpful. I would love, love to have
clear skin.
Thank-you so very much for taking the time to read my message and possibly
have helpful answers.

I love printable … For my new EO binder I’m starting. I would love to be able to print some things… Such as the uses for Frank. I didn’t know most of them you posted and I know I won’t remember them.

I also had a rash that I know got worse when I used the Frankincense each time. I went to my Doctor and he said it was a Contact Dermatitis and prescribed Clobetasol Ointment. As my last resort I had to use it and the rash disappeared. I am now back to using the Frankincense mildly and I haven’t had a reoccurrence.

Ruthie, this rash you speak of could be a toxin push out. If I were you I would stop the protocol and see if the rash goes away to determine what it might be by elimination. Just curious, what are you treating the rash with if anything?

Hi Mary, thank you for your question! If it were me, I would lean towards Geranium as it’s such a skin friendly, anti-microbial essential oil with tightening properties that might help. Adding Frankincense with it may be very beneficial as well. Using organic emu oil as a carrier is a suggestion for you as it may help take the essential oils deeper into the dermis according to some studies. I carry a skin serum with an emu oil base in the CW Shop that contains geranium, frank and several other EOs that may be beneficial in your case too.

i have had the worse cold with runny eyes and nose. Rebecca mentioned a protocol which I used and did help but eyes were running like a faucet. I found an idea on line. 1 drip each frankincense and lavender mixed in a CO. Rub on orbital bone and sinus cavities. I did it every couple of hours and it worked.

Saw your article on vertigo relief. I applied the frankincense as directed, and had relief in less than 10 minutes! I have suffered from intermittant episodes of vertigo for over 20 years, most lasting 12 – 24 hours. I’ll try this sooner into the episode next time, and if it works as well, you’ll have me for life!

I have fibromyalgia and for about the last 6 months I’ve been diffusing 3 drops lavender and 2 drops Frank overnight as needed. I’ve noticed an amazing difference in my pain levels in the morning. Before I struggled to stand up straight & the pain in my feet (planted fascitis) was terrible in the am – I’ve noticed a huge difference in my pain levels and I’m more relaxed because of the lavender.

This is a wonderful list of tips!
