All Purpose Healing Salve

featured products
all purpose healing salve All Purpose Healing Salve was first introduced on the blog as a Mother's Day post in 2012: DIY Skin Care for Gardeners.  It's become pretty popular over the years, and people say wonderful things about what it does but I still think I love it the most!  My simple All Purpose Healing Salve is soon to go retail so I decided to publish a snappier blog post with a new photo, I've been wanting to do this for a long time.  Don't worry, I'll keep sharing the recipe if you keep making it :-)  Take a few notes and gather what your supplies because I can almost promise you that once you experience what All Purpose Healing Salve is capable of you won't want to be without it. If I had to choose one all purpose skin care product, this workhorse of a salve is it.  The organic ingredients are moisturizing, anti-microbial, gentle enough for baby, healing and best of all, SIMPLE! Simple ingredients, simple to make.
All Purpose Healing Salve
Recipe Type: Salve
Author: Camp Wander
anti-microbial moisturizing salve. Use on cuts, burns, bruises, scrapes, eczema, itching skin and for diaper rash.
Ingredients
 • 1 cup organic solid coconut oil - I use Gold Label by Tropical Traditions
 • 1 cup organic olive oil
 • 4 tablespoons beeswax pastilles
 • 1/2 teaspoon vitamin e oil
 • PER 4oz JAR add the following amounts:
 • 10 drops pure CW Lavenderessential oil
 • 8 drops pure CW Melaleuca essential oil
 • 6 drops pure CW Lemon essential oil
 • Four - 4 oz glass mason jars
Instructions
 1. For convenience and easy pouring, use a glass Pyrex measuring bowl with a spout and handle for melting coconut and olive oils, set it inside a deep saucepan with 3 inches hot water. On low heat, slowly heat the coconut oil, olive oil and beeswax. Melt slowly, be careful not to let any water splash into the oils, this could cause mold issues. Stir occasionally to keep the beeswax melting in.
 2. When the coconut oil, olive oil and beeswax have melted completely, add vitamin e oil and stir gently.
 3. Prepare jars by adding lavender, melaleuca and lemon essential oils to the bottom of each clean glass jar. Pour melted oils over the essential oils, no need to stir but you can if you must!
 4. Fill 1/4 inch from the top of each jar, cover with a paper towel and let sit at least 6 hours until solid. Seal snugly with lid.
 5. Shelf life of All Purpose Healing Salve is approximately 4 to 6 months without vitamin e oil added (preservative). With vitamin e, approximately 6 to 8 months.
 6. Remember, coconut oil will melt at 76 degrees, store in a dark, cool place for best results.
Solid organic coconut oil is a natural moisturizer, it's antibacterial and extremely good for your skin.  It's also the only source of lauric acid outside of mother's milk.  Organic Olive oil has antioxidants including hydroxytyrosol with anti-inflammatory properties.  Pure Lavender essential oil is an incredible healer for the skin, it's anti-microbial with special properties that aid in tissue restoration.  Pure Lemon essential oil cleanses and disinfects and Melaleuca checks in as a strong antimicrobial for wound care due to it's anti-viral properties.  Use only the cleanest and purest ingredients for All Purpose Healing Salve, I can't stress this point enough.  If you scrimp on quality ingredients, your salve will suffer and your efforts will be wasted on a mediocre product. healing salve What can you do with this salve you ask?  Sanitize and moisturize!  Keep your heels velvety soft this summer by applying All Purpose Healing Salve every night.  It makes a GREAT diaper rash salve.  Soothes dry itching skin that may be allergy related.  Super for sunburned noses of the canine persuasion!  Word to the wise, because this salve has Lemon in it, you're skin will be more vulnerable to sunburn if you go out in the sun after applying, wait 8 hrs to be safe. Wound care to protect against superbugs.  Pure essential oils are very sophisticated in preventing antibiotic resistance than synthetic antibiotics because of their almost 500 chemical constituents vs prescription antibiotics 7 or 8.  And, because every growing year is different due to weather, drought, pests, stress or too much water the chemical constituents of essential oils will adjust as a result.  Mother Nature can outsmart a lab any day of the week. Note to the Wise!  It’s easy to double the recipe if you’re making gifts!  A small jar of salve is a gift that keeps on giving. Purchase some lip balm pots or tins and fill with salve to keep in your purse or backpack.  Be sure to share, everyone can benefit from an all natural healing salve, it’s just a nice thing to do! I'm pleased to finally offer Camp Wander All Purpose Healing Salve to those of you who don't have the time or the motivation to make your own!  Rest assured my salves are made with only the purest ingredients including organic, hand processed coconut, organic oil olive, beeswax, non-GMO vitamin e and the purest essential oils that my family and myself use every day.  I like to say that my salves are so pure they're edible, because they are!

Rebecca, the amounts for the essential oils listed are per jar, right? So, four times the amount listed if you wanted to make all four jars into APHS? And if I want to be able to use the salves when we might be exposed to sunlight, would substituting Frankincense essential oil drop for drop for the Lemon essential oil be my best bet?

Hi, everyone! I was just reading through the comments and can answer 1 question :) I have Rebecca’s recipe from a post last July. Yes, the drops listed are per jar. Frankincense is one of my favorite go-to oils and I’ll be very interested to see what Rebecca says about substituting it for the lemon regarding light exposure!

Lemon lavender and peppermint salve or LLP works great for hives. I do not have her recipe in front of me but search for it in her website. My daughter gets hives a lot especially when she is out side in the cold. I have also used this my self with in four to five minutes the hives stop itching and go down. Happy kids and happy mom.

Hi Rebecca, I just watched you and Jillie on TV! It got me thinking that I need to make some anti-aging salve. I searched you website and can not find the recipe. I found something that tells sme to use Lavender, Cypress and Frankincense but did not indicate the amounts. Can you help me?

Margaret, correct. Amounts of EOs listed are PER 4 oz JAR. Thanks for your question, I clarified the info in the recipe form :) To answer your 2nd question, Frankincense is always a good idea in my book!

I had purchased a salve sampler from camp wander and have recently been using the healing salve on my boy’s sunburned shoulders. I was amazed at how quickly the heat in his shoulders lessened. And overnight he was clearly feeling much less tight and sore. I’ve purchased what I need to make more healing salve on my own. It also helped some nasty splinter removal sites after he chose to run around barefoot too!

I will say my sample is a little on the runny side. I’ll have to play around with adding a bit more beeswax to stiffen it up.

Received my Dream Salve order along with the samples of the Healing Salve, thank you! Dream Salve works really well but the Healing Salve is AMAZING! I have super sensitive skin and every little nick and tick makes me itch and the Healing Salve cures it immediately. It also has cleared the eczema. Thank you so much and so glad I found your site!

I want to make APHS for my dog who just had surgery and has a long incision. I need to know if the EOs I have are good quality. They are Aura Casia, the only brand available locally. The coconut oils I have in the house are Spectrum organic virgin and LouAna. If these aren’t good quality, I will buy online, but it will take a while to get them. Thanks in advance to all who answer

Thank you so much Rebecca, I will try remelting it (our house is at 71 degrees). Will remelting it effect the oils in the salve? I just love this stuff for my little boys who constantly have scrapes and bumps. They ask for it each night because it is so fun to see how fast their “booboo’s” vanish:)

Angela, the thin consistency wouldn’t be affected by omitting vitamin e but, now that it’s summer if you house is really warm that could make the difference. If your house is cool and you don’t think it’s heat related you could remelt your salve very slowly until and add a little more beeswax.

Hi Rebecca, I recently made a batch of all purpose salve and did not use the vitamin E oil. I followed the directions to the T, and mine came out runny at room temp and has to be kept in the fridge to be a solid. What went wrong? Does the vitamin E make it less liquid like at room temp? or should I try adding more beeswax next time? Thanks for your help!

Hi there, I have a quick questionn about the bees wax. I have everything to make the salve except the beeswax. I went to buy some and all they had was big blocks of it. Can I use this and possibly grated it with a grater or chop it up. Seems like that big clump would take forever to melt!! Thank you

My daughter is unfortunately allergic to coconut. I would love to make this salve though. Would either cocoa butter or Shea butter work as a substitute in this recipe?

Rebecca
Rebecca

May 10, 2017

I’ve had that occur too and in my case it was the coconut oil at the bottom of the container. I use unrefined, virgin coconut oil and I believe there’s a little bit of grit that sinks to the bottom of the container. I reserve the coconut oil at the bottom of the gallon bucket for my dogs :)

Hmmmm I’ve never had my salves separate, ever. I’m not sure what might have happened or of the products you used but, if you need to melt them back down the easiest and gentlest way is to put your jars on a clean cookie sheet and put into a warm over until back to liquid state.

I made some for the first time and followed the direction…. stir it before pouring in jar but after setting 6 hours and solidifying, there are two layer, like they did not mix. Can I reheat the individual jars and stir them up or need to remelt and pour into one container, remix and re pour into smaller jars? Will the heat miss up the oils?

Thanks.

Is this salve good for eczema? My niece has is really bad on both of her inner elbows. She scratches so much that she now has thick patches on them. Alison, you can give Organic Blemish Peel a try and another protocol you could try is a drop of Oregano in 1/2 teaspoon raw honey. Dab on problem areas after you’ve tried a test patch on the inside of your elbow. Oregano can work great for acne but it’s a hot one!

Im so happy to hear that it’s helping with your skin issues! All you need to do to add more beeswax is warm the jar slowly in warm oven until salve is in liquid state, pour into a small glass mason jar, add additional beeswax, melt then repour your jar! It won’t reduce the salve benefits at all :)

I love this salve!!! I have a friend with severe eczema and this salve is the only thing that relieves it! I just made a double batch and for some reason it is not setting up (even after 24 hours of sitting). I also tried putting one in the fridge and then letting it come to room temp to see if that worked but it didn’t.
Can I melt more beeswax and then add it in or is it to late? I don’t want to ruin the whole batch :-(
Please advise!!

Thank you for posting your recipe! I have made it a few times now. The first few times, I used white beeswax, and when that ran out, I tried a different batch that is yellow beeswax. I don’t know if that makes a difference, but I noticed that now my jars are developing whitish “specks” within the salve. The salve smells the same, the specks are only within the salve and they seem to “melt” when I scoop some out with my finger. Any thoughts or advice? Thank you so very much!
